Rock and RollI’ve been getting a feel for street photography again these past few weeks. I put the 10mm on and off I go. You really have to get into peoples faces to shoot at 10mm. Events are good because everyone is usually there for a reason, to have a good time. I wandered round on Sunday during the Mathew St Festival grabbing shots. Some girls screamed and put their hands up over their faces, which is a hilarious reaction to a simple photo. Some just stood there. I tried some in your face shots and some from the hip style candids. Most of all I was trying to capture life on the streets. f/8, iso800-1600, near infinity focus and off I go. That way if I saw something I could just snap it without thinking. Of course you lose any depth of field, which isn’t a huge loss at 10mm anyway. I often found it was too wide though. People were getting lost in the scene. So I set it to around 18.75mm … ish. That would then equate to 30mm on full frame, which is a good setting for street. Captures enough of their surroundings without making them seem lost in it. Uploaded on Aug 27, 2008 CreamfieldsMy 2nd day at Creamfields. A much more enjoyable day there. I had my bearings, I had some light and best of all I had a better time. People were still dancing and some even commented that it was too late for photos even though it was only 7pm. I guess they hadn't slept yet. Arriving there was like turning up to a party after it had ended with the whole area trashed and yet no-one had gone home. Uploaded on Aug 25, 2008 CreamfieldsMy first visit to Creamfields and its a completely crazy surreal place. Its like one giant party. Theres no real break from it. Everyone is 'having it large' everywhere. This girl was spinning some sticks and dancing around to Fatboy Slim playing in the background. Uploaded on Aug 24, 2008 Arbores Laetae - Joyful Trees
So I’m standing there watching 3 trees rotate slowly and I have no idea how to show that in a photo. I take a few photos and well its just some trees. I push the settings as far as I’m willing to go handheld and again its just trees. I push them further while I’m standing on the rotating platform and I get an idea. I dash back to my car for my tripod and set my ND filter to max. I manage to get a 4 second exposure in the middle of the day that really shows what this art piece is about. You stand there watching the trees and the world goes by. Commissioned by the Biennial and created by Uploaded on Aug 21, 2008 |
